Chelsea Wolfe performs “Appalachia” live for NYLON TV in NY
Here at NYLON TV, we love Chelsea Wolfe. Not only have we been listening to Unknown Rooms since it came out, we also admire her fashion abilities - this girl can pull of anything. (Including that amazing nose pincher she’s wearing in our video…) So, when she was in town to play her sold-out show at Music Hall of Williamsburg, we were on it. Come with us inside Black Gold, our favorite record store in Brooklyn, for a total shiver-inducing performance of Appalachia. Check out Black Gold here

Zorch sign to Sargent House and debut first new track via SPIN

Austin duo Zorch made a little rumble a couple years back with a pair of EPs that demonstrated just how good “weird” can be. Specifically, their Cosmic Gloss demonstrated a fantastic amalgam of glistening sounds: the sun-kissed psychedelia of Flaming Lips, the smart instrumentality of Jaga Jazzist and the cut-up aesthetics of Animal Collective. Keyboardist Zac Traeger and the drummer named Shmu (both also sing and play omnichord) are now prepping their debut album Zzoorrcchh for a summer release on Los Angeles’ Sargent House. Our first taste of the thing comes in the form of “We All Die Young,” which sallies forth sporting the same kind of fierce exuberance that their labelmates Fang Island are celebrated for. That might make the song’s title seem a bit antithetical, but a closer read of the lyrics tell a different story: this song is a blazing tribute to the brief time that we do have here on this Earth. “What a day, let’s celebrate it / I want to feel elated!” Us too. Let’s go. - by Chris Martins
CVLT Nation: Chelsea Wolfe Live with King Dude Videos

What you have here below is 5:15 of visual & sonic ear candy. It’s Chelsea Wolfe & King Dude performing together in Toronto. On the real, I had to watch this footage on repeat because it’s that fucking good! The way this video is shot adds even more mood to these already very moody compositions. After the jump, check out this cryptic noir performance by Chelsea Wolfe & King Dude, plus a couple of surprises!

SPIN: Watch Fang Island “Asunder” Live in studio video & European Tour Announced
Fang Island, the Brooklyn-based trio who famously (and appropriately) described their hook-heavy guitar heroics as “everyone high-fiving everyone,” keep things relatively low-key in their new clip for “Asunder,” off last year’s Major. The five-and-a-half-minute in-studio clip, recorded and mixed while the band made a recent tour stop in Los Angeles, focuses on the threesome as they, well, tear the room asunder. Scroll down for Fang Island’s upcoming tour dates, which include a trip to this year’s Sasquatch! Music Festival.

N.M.E. : Mars Volta’s Omar Rodriguez-Lopez unveils new band Bosnian Rainbows’ first song - listen

At The Drive-In and The Mars Volta guitarist Omar Rodriguez-Lopez has unveiled the first track from his new band Bosnian Rainbows. The track is titled ‘Torn Maps’ and you can hear it below
Rodriguez-Lopez, who announced in late 2012 that he and At The Drive-In frontman Cedric Bixler had placed The Mars Volta on hiatus, is joined in the new outfit by drummer Deantoni Parks, keyboardist Nicci Kasper and singer Teri Gender-Bender, who is also a member of noise experimentalists Le Butcherettes.
Speaking to NME about his new band, the axeman revealed that the band’s debut album was recorded in Germany in late 2012 and will be released later this year. He said: “We recorded the record over in Europe, we did a tour across Europe and we recorded the album in Hamburg, Germany. It’s been done for a while and we’ve decided to put it out this year. We’re really happy with it.”
Rodriguez-Lopez has previously collaborated with Gender-Bender on his 2012 solo album ‘Octopus Kool Aid’ and has also recorded extensively with Kasper. Speaking about this, he said: “I’ve collaborated with all three of these artists before. I worked with Teri from Le Butcherettes on a solo record of mine, maybe a year or two ago. I also worked with her on the second Butcherettes record, I realized just how wonderful a musician she is.”
He continued: “I invited Deantoni Parks into The Mars Volta as our drummer, as a hired musician. But, as I got to know him, I realised ‘Wow, this guy is a brilliant composer’. He works as hard as me and he’s got thousands of songs in his catalogue. We must have made six records together over the years. It’s the same thing with Nicci Kasper, we all love writing music. It’s really something else.”
The guitarist also spoke about the different approach he has taken when it comes to writing material with his new band, compared to his days in The Mars Volta, adding: “It’s the classic thing, you stick with one way of doing things for so long that you start to crave a different way of working.”
He continued: “I did eight years in At The Drive-In being in a collective, so after that I wanted something where I was in charge and no one asked me any questions. After 11 years then in The Mars Volta of doing that, I found myself feeling very lonely and I felt like I abandoned my friendships, so I’ve decided to focus on this band.”
Rodriguez-Lopez also spoke about Bixler and revealed that the singer is currently working on his debut solo album, which will mainly consist of acoustic. Asked if he was missing working with Bixler, who he has worked with for almost 20 years, the guitarist said: “It’s been very strange being without Cedric. It’s one of those bittersweet moments, it’s great for both of us because he’s making this great solo record, which is more of an acoustic thing. I’m really excited to hear another side of him and to work on music without me. He’s composing all the music, playing all the instruments, literally doing everything himself, rather than just singing over the top of my songs.”
Bosnian Rainbow’s as yet untitled debut album is due for release later this year. The band are set to tour extensively in support of the record.

Brooklyn Vegan: Chicago Show Photos, Videos & Recap: Chelsea Wolfe

For the fourth night of Tomorrow Never Knows 2013, Schubas hosted an evening of acoustic and jam-rock heaviness with first openers Sabers, followed by King Dude, The Amazing, and headliner Chelsea Wolfe…
…As midnight approached, headliner Chelsea Wolfe and bandmates Ben Chisholm (synth) and Andrea Calderon (violin) launched into their acoustic performance. Wolfe apologized early in her set, saying she was sick and that her voice “has a mind of its own.” Despite her apology and use of a throat spray between songs, Wolfe was spot-on with excellent clarity. The trio performed stripped down versions of tracks from The Grime and The Glow and Apokalypsis, as well as numbers from her latest, Unknown Rooms: A Collection of Acoustic Songs. Their headlining set was intimate and incredibly captivating. Wolfe returned to the stage alone for an encore, and played a cover of Sibylle Baier’s “The End.”

Consequence of Sound Premieres new track from This Town Needs Guns - “I’ll Take the Minute Snake”

If anyone’s reading this, it’s a pretty safe bet the apocalypse never happened!
Despite the good news of our continued existence, we still have to deal with a day of ceaseless tweets and Facebook posts, pointing out the absurdity of the End Days with asinine hashtags and irritating memes. But if we’re to live through such a humor-geddon, then there should be at least one bright spot of Doomsday-related talk worth consuming.
Cue Oxford-based math-rock band This Town Needs Guns. After their zoo-centric 2008 debut Animals, the band’s sophomore LP 13.0.0.0.0 focuses primarily on the end of the Mayan calendar. But rather than utilizing the doom and gloom aspects, drummer Chris Collis said the band explored the concept as a force for positivity and creative rebirth.
“The completion of 13 b’ak’tuns (occurring on 21st December 2012) marks the creation of the world of human beings according to the Maya. It is more the completion of a cycle rather than necessarily being a destructive event such as the end of the world which some people predict. It was this idea of completion and progression that we wanted to incorporate into the album and artwork.
The notion of change has been a large part of our band recently, having lost a singer and then a bass player. We felt as if a cycle had been completed with the old lineup and a new cycle was now starting with Henry (Tremain), our new singer/guitarist/bassist/wunderkid. It also contains the idea of progression as a band. Though Maya texts say nothing about what might happen at the 13th Bak’tun, we do know that the end of each bak’tun was considered a time of great change.”
And that upheaval has led to an album of intricate yet uncomplicated prog rock, encapsulated with the single “I’ll Take the Minute Snake”. Musically, the track facilitates a vibe similar to the limo scene from 2012: ceaseless forward momentum of crashing drums and slick guitar and bass grooves right into the ending refrain of glitchy noises. While it’s all destruction aurally, the lyrical content presents hope, with the protagonist longing for a re-connection amid the firestorm of sounds, aided in part by Tremain’s evocative yelps. Stream it above.
13.0.0.0.0 hits stores on January 22nd via Sargent House (pre-order your digital copy on Itunes here) and be sure to also check out the slightly mellower “Left Aligned”. story by: Chris Coplan

Interview Magazine: Discovery "Crypts"

Crypts are a band with a penchant for mischief. The cover of their new self-titled LP, which features synth and drum machine impresario Bryce Brown crawling on the roof of a car in the dead of night with a cigarette hanging from his mouth, is a perfect representation of the band’s impish spirit. Fittingly, the image was captured by the band’s second synth player,Nick Bartoletti, who is also responsible for a hefty arsenal of visuals for the band’s live show. Singer Steve Snere (yup—his real name) was apparently not on hand for the debaucherous photo op, but still boasts his own credentials as a writhing, gyrating, stage-destroying frontman of extreme caliber.
The boys mirror their music in a way that could be passed off as mere façade were their electronic orchestrations not so blinding and formidable. Reminiscent of My Bloody Valentine and Suicide, they marry one chaotic sound after another without losing the intention of the overall composition. Snere’s vocals—a mix of wails and staccato belts—bite through the mess with attitude and a bright timbre shared with T. Rex’s Marc Bolan. Having just wrapped a tour with The Mars Volta’s Omar Rodriguez Lopez, and coming up on their second anniversary as a band this winter, Crypts gave us a minute to discuss how they came together, and what goes into those brutal tracks of theirs.
AGE: Drinking age, and above
HOMETOWN: Seattle, Washington. And, one from Cleveland.
CURRENT LOCATION: A conference call, coast to coast
INTRODUCTIONS: Snere: The intro to the song Breathe was taken from an old 7” record of kids with dysfunctional breathing. It’s a doctor giving different examples of patients with various respiratory problems.
SOUNDS LIKE: Brown: Roland CR-8000 (modified with midi to trigger boards), Alesis HR16, Akai XR-20, Korg Poly 800, Korg MS2000, Roland MC-505, Boss Dr. Sample, Korg Kaoss KP-3, LZX Analog Modular Video Synth (video & audio), various pedals, and Reason.
GOING STEADY: Brown: I met Nick through a couple mutual friends. He was doing mostly visual art and projections, but he wanted to learn music. He started coming over to my house, and I showed him some stuff, and it was like, “Damn, this is awesome!” We just kicked it around and started playing together.
HOLIDAY VIBES: Snere: It was around Christmas time of 2010 when everyone had a break that we got a space and went at it. We bought a PA and hung out with each other the whole time, and just worked on music.
SUICIDAL TENDENCIES: Snere: I either wanted to do something super garage-y, like noisy and sloppy, or I wanted to do something more like Suicide—electronic shit. It just went more this way.
COVER BOY: Bartoletti: I took the photograph on the cover of our album. I’m not sure when exactly that night was, but we know it was on Capitol Hill, because you can see a Pike Street dumpster sign.
Brown: I was drunk. That was not my car. I jumped into a trash can; I jumped out of a trash can; and then I landed on the top of that car. Steve wasn’t around, but we were probably just leaving the bar he works at.
Bartoletti: The car was talkin’ shit.
VIDEODROME: Bartoletti: I have an analog modular video synthesizer that I use live. I have a video sampler that I control with my laptop. We run the analog and the digital stuff. I also have a video mixer, a little security camera on Steve, and I have a bunch of clips that I’ve made. But, I’m not like a VJ because its all stuff I make that I cue up in real time. I don’t download stock footage or play in spinning cubes.
LIVE SHOW: Snere: Its dark, and super loud. We bring our own PA. Generally it’s aimed to make our presence known, whether that’s good or bad. That’s always been my motto: if you’re there, better make sure people remember it.
Bartoletti: Sensory overload.
HABITS: Brown: Vitamin C shots and cigarettes.
